Describe yourself

I'm Audrey Cheng, a journalism student at NU. I have always been fascinated by the world of entrepreneurship and startups, but it wasn't until this summer that I was able to identify my fears as something I create and something I can set aside in order to pursue my passion in entrepreneurship. Ever since I was really young, I created an idea that I wasn't good enough and that I was working hard for a future that I would love. But this summer, I realized that the future I used to imagine is happening right now. I'm 100% committed to working on a startup this year and I will honor my word every step of the way.
As a journalism student at Northwestern University, I wanted to use my writing and communication skills to cause change and ultimately better the world. But for me, just writing about issues isn't enough. I want to physically do something, whether through a nonprofit or for-profit business, that will create and inspire change. Though I've been exposed to the communications and marketing aspect of starting a business, I frankly don't have a lot of knowledge on how to start a business. I would love to learn, so I’m committed to make my experience at Startup Incinerator as fulfilling as possible.
Creating a ‘social’ business is very important to me, as I am passionate about connecting people. With the rise in social media and the shift towards web-based businesses, I want to create a platform for people to feel empowered to create products and receive feedback for what they create. Because I’m a consistent and determined person, I will make what I am passionate about a reality.
My love of entrepreneurship started this summer after my friend invited me to an event at 1871. Founder of Belly, Logan LaHive, spoke about his countless failures and how he learned from and appreciated each of his rejections, because they only helped him improve his product. His speech, as well as weekly ‘Startup Bootcamp’ seminars, greatly inspired me. I’ve also shared ideas with and received feedback from various rising entrepreneurs in the Chicagoland area and enrolled myself in the ‘Principles of Entrepreneurship’ course at Northwestern, in order to further the possibility of contributing to the entrepreneurial circle in Chicago.
A quote that always resonates with me is, “‎How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world," spoken by Anne Frank. I wake up every morning knowing that everyone has something to contribute to this world and what I can contribute is my ideas and drive for change. I know that I can easily see myself as a powerless college student, who has no marketable skills, but I know my fascination with entrepreneurship will help me overcome all obstacles I foresee coming my way. I want to change the world and that change starts now.
